Types and Conventions of Horror (Nhung Pham)

Horror films are designed to invoke our hidden fears, to frighten and to entertain us. Film genres have particular rules attached to them therefore, in a horror movie, death would be expected otherwise it would not be frightenin. Horror is broken down in sub-genres and themes. Certain horror conventions are seen in the types of sub-genres, these include:

SLASHER-  Slasher films typically involve a psychopathic masked killer and a couple of teens, usually up to no good. They wear a mask to protect their identity and are sometimes revealed in the final scene. The killer stalks and kills a sequence of victims in a vicious way often ith a knife or some kind of blade. They are usually a person who has suffered or is traumatised from some sort of abuse therefore acts out on their past events. The victims are generally linked with the killers past. In slashers, the protagontist is mainly a female who is also known as the 'final girl', a theory made by Carol J. Clover which refers to the last female alive to confront the killer. The 'final girl' is usually a virgin and avoids the vices of the victimes e.g drugs and pre-marital sex.

PSYCHOLOGICAL/SUPERNATURAL -  Psychological horror attempts to create a realistic effect to inflict fear in its audience. it contains less harm and works mainly to mentally affect the audience rather than display graphic violent seen in slasher movies. It focuses around possessions and dark forces which can remain in a form of spritual presence or appear as a demon, ghost or witch.
SPLATTER-  Splatter horror is extreme gore which deliberately focuses on graphic portrayals of gore and graphic violence. The film usually contains lots of blood and guts through the use of special effects, it tends to display an interest in the vulnerabilty of the human body and the theatricality of its mutilation. Graphic violence and sexually suggestive imagery combined in some films have been labeled 'torture porn' or 'gorno'.

ZOMBIE-  Zombies are seen as reanimated corpse brought back to life by mystical means such as witchcraft and are described as a mindless human being. In a zombie horror movie it is conventional that the setting is an isolated area where the victims are seen to be hunted down by the zombies either wanting to eat their flesh or turn them into one.
J-HORROR-  A common convention of J-Horror films is the Yurei. Yurei, meaning 'soul' or 'spirit', are female who wear white clothing signifying the white kimono used in funeral rituals. They have long, black disheveled hair which comes from the tradition of japanese woman growing their hair long and wore it pinned up only letting it down in death. Yurei ghosts can bridge the gap back to the physical world through emotions which do not allow them to pass on if they died in a sudden or violent manner such as murder or suicide and that the rites have no been properly performed. The Yurei will persist in its haunting unless they are laid to rest by performing the missing rituals.

The Antagonist

For our antagonist, we decided to do our killer idea number 1 because idea number 2 looks more of a zombie effect and also because our horror genre is slasher we wanted the antagonist to have that gory, realistic effect to inflict fear in our audience. Slasher films typically involve a pschopathic killer, they are usually a person who has suffered or is traumatised from some sort of abuse. The idea that the antagonist have a zipper through the middle of his face looks as though he has been mutilated which could have been from his past therefore tells a story. An example of a famous slasher antagonist is Freddie Cruger of 'Nightmare on Elm Street' he is a disfugered dream stalker and uses a glove armed with razors. He is commonly identified by his burned, disfigured faced which shows that he has a disturbing past through his makeup.
This is the final makeup for our killer, we did not him to look too over the top with too much effects as this will be shown in the trailer and because our trailer is opened to everyone.
Therefore to start this process, our antagonist will be played by another student. I practiced how to do the 'zipper face' through youtube tutourials. To create this effect i used the following products:

For this experiment we used another student to practice the antagonists makeup on. We chose him because he is a male which in horror movies they are seen as more empowering therefore, most of the horror movies have males to play the antagonist. Our actor is tall and well built, the main features of a male which is why we chose him a our antagonist.

This is a 10" zipper that I chose closes to the actors skin tone and long enough to go though the middle of the killers face. I will be applying this using a brush with latex because it is harmless and will be safe on the actor.

After applying the Zipper I used tissue to create a scar-like texture by sticking it down with latex and going over it a few times so it could look lumpy and destroyed skin.

These are the make up which consists of setting powder, foundation and a sponge to apply it. The foundation was used after the latex dry to blend it to the actors skin tone for a realistic effect. I then used the sponge and stippled the foundation to the rest of his skin. After that I set the foundation and the rest of his skin with powder.

I then used the blood in between the zips for a bloodied mouth as art of the makeup seen on the zip mouth tutorial. I am looking to do the blood not too drippy, but more dry to make it seem as though it was there for a while and has not been washed away.

Ben Nye, Fresh scab
On top of the blood I applied fresh scab by Ben Nye to create blood clots and dried blood to make it look scabby.

Dark brown/ Black eyeshadow
I used dark eye shadow in the shade of brown to bruise his face and make it look dirty.

This is the finishing result of our Antagonist:

Equipment: Reflector

This is an image of a reflector, it is used to reflect light in a shot. over the past few weeks we have been learning how to use this, we have had experience using them before at AS level with photography. It is a lot harder to use now as through out the shots people are constantly moving so you have to move the reflector accordingly.

quick test 2 (kieron)

In this logo I have used the same idea of the skull and rosses but I have made it more
colourful. The only problem is it does not go with the horror theme.

quick test logo's (kieron)

I would like to have a skull in the logo and I also like the idea of a rose. As a group we
have discussed the idea of putting our face's in the logo aswell. The only problem with this
test is there might be to much red in it.

Age Classification (Nhung Pham)

As a group we decided that the age classification for our trailer will be 15. Referring to the BBFC rules on age classifications we found that age 15 would be most suitable the trailer as there will be scenes of strong bloody violence, torture involving weapons, threats and frequent use of strong language.
